Mas Terrats is one of the best venues that we can find on the Costa Brava to celebrate a wedding. This villa is located in the heart of the “Alt Empordà” in Girona, and it seems to be taken from an idyllic fairy tale.
Why do I say this? Once you arrive there for the first time, you will be amazed by its presence. Then you enter the house and there is no corner that is not perfect. If you go out to take some air, you will be stuck with how the positive energy that flows in there all time. If after seeing this environment, you feel indifferent, I congratulate you. You are the first person I know who has not lived a jaw droping moment by that amount of care and detail.
Whether with 30 or 200 guests, it is an ideal place to celebrate an authentic and different wedding. Since its facilities allow these numbers and an infinite options to have a unique and unrepeatable wedding.
ARRIVING TO MAS TERRATS
Mas Terrats is an hour and a half from Barcelona, 40 min from Girona (the two nearest ariports), and 30min driveing from France. To get to Mas Terrats we will have to go ahead to “Figueres” and turn off towards the village of “Pontós”.
The junction to take the Mas Terrats road is a couple of minutes after the town.We will leave the asphalt to take a forest track in very good condition. It hat has no loss, since we have several posters throughout the entire route that will indicate us.
Until you reach a large oak with a swing hanging from its branches. It is here that the road splits into two tracks. One to enter Mas Terrats directly. The other to access the guest parking.
A WEDDING IN MAS TERRATS
Although Mas Terrats has infinite possibilities to celebrate a wedding, the original starting point is this. This flat of grass in two heights that is just after arriving, is the perfect place to do the ceremony.
This will be the first view of the house and its surroundings that the guests will have when they leave the parking lot. So it is a very good option to score your first goal!
From a photographic point of view, it is a perfect place: spacious, clean and with natural light. But we must be very careful with the position of the sun at the time of the ceremony. A bad position of you may result as bad photos. Light is my key feature, imagine what will happen if one of you are full lighted and the other one will be in shade. The one in the light will have eyes closel most of the time, the other will be blinded by the light that comes to shade.
A safe bet would be to celebrate the wedding in the late afternoon, with a low sun if the temperature allows it. Or if we have no choice to work with hard light… I will put the couple against the light and the guests looking at the sun. I know you will think it is not the best thing. But believe me it is better that they “suffer a little” so as you will have some beautiful wedding photographs, rather than a bad memory (for life) for this decision.
The fact that this area is divided into two heights can be used according to the number of guests your wedding has.
For something more intimate, it is recommended to hold the celebration on the “upper floor”. While if we have more than 100 guests, the lower area will be perfect for our needs.

Winter or summer, It does not matter. You will have plenty of natural light as its surrounded by nature.

It is a great place to be able to make assemblies, decorate, prepare and throw a unique party.
MORE IDEAS FOR YOUR WEDDING
Another possibility we have to celebrate a wedding at Mas Terrats, is to take advantage of the space in the mill. Looking towards the front door, we can find it on the left hand side under the large trees.
It is an area where we can have all the guests in the shade. And since it is very close to the house, we are sure that we will not have problems connecting speakers or music equipment.
From the point of view of the photographs, it should be kept in mind that the natural light bounced off the trees can give us green casts. Something that looks very bad on the skins, but that a good wedding photographer knows how to solve.
THE POOL ZONE
Without a doubt, this is the best face of Mas Terrats. Before the wedding, you can spend some free time with the guests who stays in the house. Take advantage of the porch and the pool to relax before the show take off.
But going back to the wedding, this is where many couples decide to celebrate the cocktail or aperitif. It is a wide area and very well located. Where it is easy for the guests to move and flow.
In addition, even if at first glance they are not appreciated, there are quite a few benches where the elderly (or whoever wishes) can sit.
As for light, I can’t put a single fault on it. It is such an open space that there will be no lack of light neither in the morning nor in the afternoon.
"LOS OLIVOS" AREA IN MAS TERRATS
Personally, I think that this area is extremely beautiful. But at the same time, it is very little valued among couples.
Even though at the time of taking the photos this post the olive trees were not at their best, I think it is a perfect space to do all kinds of montages.
A dinner around the center pole lights, with long tables underneath. Parting and dancing here would be the best with the sky full of stars!
Or look at the set up with the tents in the last photo, so that all the guests can sleep in Mas Terrats (this last photo is not by Blanc Mate).
PAVILION AND BARBECUE ENTRANCE
Photographically speaking, this is where the good part starts… This area is very large. Not even with the photos you can get a real idea of the space that there is.
Usually, this space is used as an alternative to the cocktail, or it can also serve as an area to set up the tables and make the main meal of the wedding outdoors.
The problem is that, usually, when we arrive at this site we no longer have sunlight. And if we do not have garland lights or a similar alternative… Photographers are going to be forced to use the flash. Something that the videographer will not like, neither you will do. Because we are going to throw away all the “magic” of the wedding pictures in Mas Terrats. I highly recomend good garland light and a profesional camera system which suports high iso without noise. So as to achive defined photos with the “natural” artificial light. Other wise, we will have blurry photos and flash will become a must.
Photos aside, do not miss the incredible little house prepared (exclusively) to cook meat on the barbecue.
PAVILION INNER ZONE
This pavilion is a success in all ways. In an environment like this, Mas Terrats had to have a place to shelter those weddings where the rain decides to make an appearance. It is a multipurpose space. Here you can have a dinner, a party or any activity that you can think of.
The decoration of the 3 columns with the branches that go up to the ceiling is a success. Since in this type of place if or if we are going to have to use the flash to take good photos. Having a large white surface to bounce off the light will make images look much better.
For the party, the curtain of lights that is hung from the ceiling, will act as a separation of the areas of the pavilion. Which will gives us a lot of freedom to play with. You can see them gruped on the right hand of the picture in the 3rd photo.

THE INTERIORS IN MAS TERRATS
GROUND FLOOR
We can enter Mas Terrats from several places. I recommend doing it through the pool door or the main path. Both doors lead us to the main hall. That will leave you (for sure) with your mouth open.
This ground floor has different rooms, and has many amenities (including a bar room and a game room with billiards).
From a photographic point of view I think that this whole plant is very beautiful but with very little natural light. We have to keep in mind that Mas Terrats its an old renovated farmhouse. And although it is very well adapted, many windows (and more on the ground floor) are small. So we will have to force iso and open the diaphragm so that light enters the camera. Or we will have to use flash.
1st FLOOR AND ROOMS
When going up to the first floor things change. Here we can find a couple of very interesting halls with a little more natural light thanks to the large windows.
Personally, I really like these spaces as they are an ideal area to take photos of preparations or even a “first look”. Since everyone has space to work, and the photographer can seek for good angles without disturbing anyone.
Even so, all will depend on which of the 9 suite-type rooms that Mas Terrats has we choose. The good part is that we will have enough room for maneuver to accommodate several people there. It should be noted that all 9 rooms have their own bathroom, and they are not exactly small…
THE SUITE
I think this room deserves a mention apart from the others. For me it is the best one of all Mas Terrat’s rooms.
Whether the bride or groom decides to stay in this room (and make their preparation stuff there) they are going to be in the right place without a doubt.
We will have plenty of space (I have been here with more than 9 people and nobody bothered anyone). And most importantly: we will have a very beautiful light at all times thanks to the orientation and the large window that opens onto the balcony.
It is normal that this one is one of the best rooms from the photographer’s point of view. Because with all these ingredients, the photos come out alone itself!
THE BIG SALON OF MAS TERRATS
Surely in the photos of the exteriors you have wondered what is behind those 5 windows on the upper floor. Well, actually the best spot of Mas Terrats is hidden here.
This third floor room is the icing on the cake. It is the perfect place to appreciate the beauty of the place, it has lots of natural light, it is spacious and it is cool if we open the windows on each side.
Between this space and the previous room, it is impossible for the wedding preparations to go wrong. Now the question will be to decide who stays here and who in the other room. But this is already your choice 😜
MAS TERRAT'S HISTORY
¿WHERE DOES MAS TERRATS COME FROM?
At this point, it is nothing new that Mas Terrats is a very charming place. It is ideal as a villa to celebrate weddings in the Costa Brava. But surely you are wondering where so much attention to detail comes from. Her name is Rosa María, and she is the current owner of this 17th century farmhouse. And the house itself it’s the best memory her father could ever leave him.
Rosa Mª’s father was diagnosed with a very serious illness. So the doctors did not dare to give him more than a year of life expectancy. At that moment, the man decided to turn his body and soul to Mas Terrats. He put so much effort into its restoration that it ended up being his life project for more than 10 years. So now, when Rosa Mª talks about Mas Terrats; she says that she “does not take care of a house, but she takes care of a father”.
THE FOREST
I did not want to finish this article without presenting you with one last alternative to make your wedding something unique. Mas Terrats also offers the possibility of celebrating your wedding in the middle of its forests. These are two adapted areas, one small and one larger, which are located a few meters from the house.
The small forest (first photo) is very easy to access for everyone. While the large forest is above the small one and we will have to climb a small slope (be careful with your shoes because it can give problems).
As for light, here it is again essential to control your position. Depending on your situation, you will be full of specks of light that filter through the leaves of the trees. Something that will give a very unflattering result to the wedding photoreport.
